9/26/2023 0 Comments Tioga road opening![]() ![]() Glacier Point is one of the most visited tourist locations within Yosemite National Park due to its panoramic high sierra viewpoint that doesn’t require hiking. Pending nothing significant, expect daily swelling around the rivers/streams regularly every afternoon/evening in late May-early July, especially on those hot days with increased snowmelt. Note: The way this winter plays out, there will be many opportunities for Yosemite Valley to flood. One of our favorites includes Yosemite’s North Rim on our Yosemite Icons trip and the Southern Rim of the Valley via the Pohono Trail by Tunnel View. Some backpacking trails also originate in the Valley, allowing you to reach some outstanding overnight locations between 6000-7500′ where snow should be present but lessened by later May and throughout June. ![]() We expect the famous Half Dome in a Day hike to open with cables in place during/after the first or second week of June. The latter is usually available year-round due to its southern exposure. There are many day hikes around the Valley, some that originate from the Valley floor and rise rapidly, such as the very popular Mist Trail/Nevada Fall Loop or the Yosemite Falls hike. This season’s waterfalls will be insane, and visitation will be very high to witness them firsthand between April-June. The Valley is the most popular and visited area of Yosemite. The iconic and scenic Yosemite Valley is open year-round unless forced to close by weather or other naturally occurring events. Additionally, a free wilderness climbing permit is required for all overnight big wall climbs.Yosemite Valley – 4,000 feet in elevation Start from the visitor center or Dog Lake parking areas instead (once Tioga Road reopens in summer).Ĭlimbing closures are in effect on several routes each year from March 1 through July 15 to protect peregrine falcons. Elizabeth Lake Trailhead (in Tuolumne Meadows Campground) is closed.All trails in this area are open, but visitors must remain on trail through the burned area. Except for trails, the area north and west of North Dome is closed due to a fire.Merced Grove of Giant Sequoias is closed through October for biomass removal.A permit is required 24 hours per day to hike to the top of Half Dome when the cables are up. The Half Dome cables are up for the season.The trail to Bridalveil Fall is closed due to the Bridalveil Fall Rehabilitation Project until fall 2023.To hike on this trail during a day it is closed, you must be within the closure area by 7 am (you don't need to be all the way through the closure by 7 am). Vernal Fall, Nevada Fall, and beyond are reachable during the closure via the John Muir Trail and Clark Point cutoff trail. The trail will be open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays and will usually be open from 3:30 pm to 7 am (there may be some nights when the trail must remain closed). From September 2 through November 2 (except holidays), the closure will be Mondays through Fridays (same hours dates subject to change). The Mist Trail from the John Muir Trail junction just uphill from the Vernal Fall footbridge to the top of Vernal Fall will be closed Mondays through Thursdays from 7 am to 3:30 pm from July 10 through September 1.You can also view a map showing road conditions outside of Yosemite. All others must use the free shuttle from Mariposa Grove Welcome Plaza (near South Entrance). When open, road is open only to vehicles displaying disability placards.
